What is 211 Virginia?

211 Virginia is a free, confidential, and accessible service that connects people with information on available community services throughout the Commonwealth. Whether you need assistance with housing, food, healthcare, or other services, 211 Virginia is here to help.

211 Virginia is a contracted service of the Commonwealth of Virginia, administered by the Virginia Department of Social Services provided in partnership with the Council of Community Services.

211 Virginia adheres to national standards set forth by Inform USA and is part of the 211 Network supported by the United Way Worldwide.

211 Virginia and the Code of Virginia

211 Virginia fulfills its mission in accordance with the Code of Virginia (§§ 63.2-222), which mandates the creation of a statewide human services information and referral system to:

  • Collect and maintain accurate and complete resource data on a statewide basis;
  • Link citizens needing human services with appropriate community resources to satisfy those needs;
  • Assist in planning for human services delivery at the local, regional, and state levels; and
  • Provide information to assist decision-makers in allocating financial and other resources to respond to state and local human service priorities.

As an accredited service, 211 Virginia follows the rigorous standards set by Inform USA, the national leader in Information and Referral services.

211 Network

211 is a nationwide initiative with over 200 local agencies responding to more than 21 million requests for help annually. Each agency, including 211 Virginia, is staffed by compassionate, highly trained resource specialists who connect individuals with local services for housing, food, healthcare, and more.

In 2000, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) designated 211 as the official three-digit number for social service referrals, underscoring its critical role in community support.

    988 is a three-digit dialing code for mental health crisis in Virginia. 211 Virginia and 988 partners to enhance support for individuals in crisis by streamlining access to resources and services through warm handoffs and providing callers with non-emergency services from the 211 Virginia resource directory.

  • Infant & Toddler Connection of Virginia

    Infant & Toddler Connection of Virginia is Virginia’s early intervention system for infants and toddlers (ages 0-36 months) with disabilities and their families. 211 Virginia maintains a central directory, answers the central intake number, and manages outreach material requests for ICTVA.

  • Kinship Navigator Program

    Kinship Navigator Program is part of Family First, an initiative of the Virginia Department of Social Services. The Kinship Navigator Program provides information, referral, education, and advocacy for kinship families. 211 Virginia maintains a designated toll-free number and provides specialized information and referral services.

    VDEM’s mission is to save lives through effective emergency management and homeland security programs by coordinating a statewide approach to any complex event or disaster. 211 Virginia is the state’s public information line and can be activated in an emergency.     The Opioid Abatement Authority is an independent body whose purpose is to abate and remediate the opioid epidemic in the Commonwealth through financial support in the form of grants, donations, or other assistance, for efforts to treat, prevent, and reduce opioid use disorder and the misuse of opioids in the Commonwealth. 211 Virginia is the state’s opioid reduction registry help line.

    No Wrong Door (NWD) is a person-centered system and statewide network of partners supporting older adults, caregivers, individuals with disabilities, veterans, and families that uses secure technology to link providers together, collaboratively supporting individuals and families seeking long-term services and supporters. 211 Virginia is the official contact center for live chat and the toll-free line for the NWD website, Easy Access, and supports the Safety Connector and Social Health Connector Tool.
